Renowned as the home of the Astor family, it is now a luxury hotel, but some parts are still open to the public at weekends. The gardens which are worth the visit alone, are open daily throughout the season. (A National Trust property.) |
The huge castle, originally a stronghold of earth and timber, was built by William the Conqueror in 1066. Today it is the largest castle in England and open to the public throughout the year. |
