River Waveney Forming the border between Suffolk and Norfolk the winding Waveney is the least typical of the Broadland rivers in its upper reaches. Villages
and broads on the River Waveney include: Beccles is a charming Suffolk Broads town with little streets or gates, shops and pubs to explore. The quay is one of the most attractive in the Broads and has its own Harbour Master. It may be interesting to know that the parents of Horatio, Lord Nelson were married in the parish church of St Michael, Beccles. Burgh Castle is home to a Roman Fort. It takes about ten minutes by foot to see the huge thick walls of the Roman fort and for the breathtaking views of the Broads. The ruins of this Roman fort overlook Breydon Water and the wide expanses of the Berney Arms Windpump and the Cantley sugar beet factory are easily seen. St Olaves Priory was built in the thirteenth century. Some early examples of bricks can be seen in the ceiling of the crypt which was built about 600 years ago. It is open all year. Somerleyton is a pretty estate village. The village, the school and Somerleyton Hall were the work of Sir Morton Peto. He made his fortune from railways and is responsible for much of the building at Lowestoft Harbour and for much of the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament. There are moorings within a ten minute walk from the hall. Oulton Broad is a lively place with shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. It is the only place on the Broads where there are power-boat race meetings. These take place most Thursdays from May to September. Nicholas Everitt Park is on the very edge of the Broad. There are tennis courts, a putting green, children's playground, boating lake and open-air swimming pool. |
