River Thurne The River Thurne offers you magnificent views of reedbeds still cut for thatch. Villages on the River Thurne include Thurne, Ludham, Potter Heigham and Hickling Broads include Horsey Mere and Hickling Broad Thurne is an attractive and unspoilt Broads village at the end of a small dyke. An attractive village full of character where the roads seemingly twist through old houses. Ludham was one of the manors given to St Benets Abbey by King Canute in 1019. Ludham village is within walking distance of the moorings at Womack Water. It is thought that its name came from the pottery industry that existed there in Roman Times. Potter Heigham is famous for its mediaeval bridge which in perilously low. In the old days masters of wherries often had to pile on stones, sinking their wherries dangerously low so that they could get under the bridge. Nowadays a pilot can be used to take holiday craft through. This village is also home to the Herbert Woods boatyard and Lathams - a super discount store, where many bargains can be found. The moorings by the Pleasure Boat Inn are a popular port of call and the village of Hickling Green is a short walk away. Between them youll find all the basic amentities to help you have an enjoyable time. Horsey Mere is well known for its bird life and you can see ducks, waders and geese. It is possible to walk from Horsey Mere to the beach. Horsey Mill in now owned by the National Trust. Hickling Broad is the largest of the broads. It has 500 acres of open water. If you include the reed beds and marshes which fringe the broad the size is 1,200 acres. Its a good place for windsurfing, with a beach for launching. Hickling Broad National Nature Reserve. |
